U-17 WWCQ: Burkina Faso hold Flamingos in Bamako

The Flamingos, Nigeria’s under-17 female team, were held to a 1-1 draw by Burkina Faso in their FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup third-round qualifying first-leg encounter in Bamako on Saturday.

A combination of poor finishing and loss of concentration in defence was the bane of the team as their hosts scored late in the game to cancel Harmony Chidi’s earlier strike.

The Flamingos dominated proceedings but could not take the lead at the interval despite the trio of Chidi, Taiwo Afolabi, and Prisca Nwachukwu all testing the goalkeeper.

They would however go ahead ten minutes into the second period, with Chidi slotting into the net for 1-0. The scorer of a hat-trick in the previous round could not add more to her solitary goal on the night due to poor finishing, despite waltzing past three defenders en route to the goal.

The World Cup bronze medalists let the lead slip away following miscommunication in defence, allowing Rainata Oubda capitalize for the equalizer six minutes from the end, leaving the tie balanced.

The Flamingos will host their counterpart in the second leg of the qualifier at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on May 18.
