Uba Sani: We can’t tackle insecurity without state police

Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna state Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna state

Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna, says security problems in Nigeria will not be solved if state police are not established.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, Sani said state governors have limited powers in matters of security agencies.

“You will recall that as a senator, I actually sponsored the creation of state police in the national assembly,” the governor said.

“We took the bill up to the level of conference committee when we were working towards amending the constitution and the senate agreed and supported me but when we had the conference committee in the house, unfortunately, we lost it at that stage when we voted 19 to 21.

“I believe as a senator that there is no way we can solve the problem of security in our country without the creation of state police because when you look at the arrangement of the security in Nigeria, state governors have limited powers in the affairs of security agencies in our country.”

The governor said his inaugural speech was to assure the people of Kaduna that everyone would be carried along in his administration.

He said people of different political parties and interests voted for him during the governorship elections.

“My inaugural speech was informed by the fact that the people that voted for me, I can say here without any fear of contradiction that they are from different political parties and different interests,” he added.

“I have been able to carry everyone along. We came up with some policies, interventions as well as projects that impacted everyone in Kaduna and that was why they came out en masse to vote for me irrespective of the religious differences and that is why I am assuring that by the grace of God, I am going to carry everyone along.

“I am happy that so far so good, I have been able to hold a meeting with different groups even those in APC and other political parties and other interest groups and that was the reason I assured them in my inaugural speech.

“I have no doubt that all of them will give me their support. We will involve them in my government because I told them politics is over and now it is governance and governance is something that we took the oath to be fair and just to everyone irrespective of the political party differences.”
