UCL: Liverpool steal late win against PSG as Bayern overcome Leverkusen

Harvey Elliot's 87th minute winner gave Liverpool an improbable win over PSG

Harry Kane scored one in each half as Bayern Munich dispatched ten-men Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in their UEFA Champions League (UCL) round of 16 first leg encounter at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

The England international striker showed his class in front of goal for the Bavarians who made light work of their Bundesliga rivals in this German derby on the European front. Jamal Musiala was the other goalscorer for Bayern, while Victor Boniface, Super Eagles striker who recently returned from injury, was an unused substitute for the visitors.

Kane calmed early nerves with the opener on nine minutes, showing excellent movement to meet Michael Olise’s cross and dispatch a header into the bottom corner.

Bayern stopped Xabi Alonso’s side from finding some rhythm with their style of play, which involved playing out from the back, allowing them to dominate the chances and possession.

Vincent Kompany’s side however had to wait until the 54th minute to double their lead and they had the opposition goalkeeper, Matej Kovar, to thank. Kovar dropped Joshua Kimmich’s cross into Musiala’s path and the German attacker tapped into an open net to put the home side in the driving seat.

Nordi Mukiele was sent off for a second booking after the hour and Kane extended Bayern’s advantage in the 75th minute from the penalty spot when he was dragged down in the area. The 32-year-old put his kick in the top corner for his second on the night, and ninth goal in this season’s UCL competition.

Victory puts Bayern Munich as firm favourites to advance into the quarter finals going into the second leg in a fortnight.

Elsewhere, Liverpool scored in the 87th minute to grab a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in Paris.

Harvey Elliot’s goal handed Arsenal Slot’s side the advantage going into the second leg in England.

The Reds were under pressure throughout the night and were kept in the game by several excellent stops from Alisson Becker.

Raphinha scored his ninth goal of the UCL season as ten-man Barcelona also pipped Benfica 1-0 in Portugal.
