UCL PREVIEW: Chelsea set to pounce on injury-ravaged PSG

Chelsea, fresh from a rare weekend off, travel to Paris to face injury-blighted Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their last-16 tie of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) at the Parc des Princes.

The shock defeat to third-tier Bradford City in the fourth round of the FA Cup in January allowed the Blues to rest over the weekend fifth round matches and prepare fully for the encounter in France.

The reigning French champions though played over the weekend and even lost Yohan Cabaye, Marquinhos, Serge Aurier and Lucas to muscle injuries during the home Ligue 1 game that saw them finish with just nine men and draw 2-2 after conceding two late goals.

The two sides met at the quarter final stage last season where PSG ran away with a 3-1 win at home. However, goals from Andre Schuerrle and Demba Ba helped Chelsea win 2-0 in the return to go through on away goals.

“They are much stronger. Now they have a great player up front in Diego Costa and super midfielders in (Cesc) Fabregas and (Nemanja) Matic. It will be complicated but we must think positive,” PSG captain, Thiago Silva, said.

But as they bid to reach the quarter-finals for the third season running, PSG need a positive result to take into the return in London on March 11 despite facing a “much stronger” Chelsea.

In Tuesday’s other game, Shakhtar Donetsk meet Bayern Munich for the first time in a competitive game bidding to record a first home win over Bundesliga visitors in 35 years.
