UCL: Real Madrid, Man United, Juventus suffer shock defeats

Real Madrid suffered their worst home defeat in the Champions League as CSKA Moscow thrashed Los Galacticos 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Fielding a weakened side sprinkled with some of his star players, Santiago Solari’s side were humbled despite starting brightly.

CSKA took the lead on 37 minutes against the run of play through Fedor Chalov’s curling shot. From then onward, Real went downhill and the Russians doubled their lead on 43 minutes through Georgy Schennikov’s volley.

Despite bringing on their record signing, Gareth Bale at half time, CSKA dominated and made it 3-0 on 73 minutes through Arnor Sigurdsson’s shot from the edge of the area.

The fans roundly booed the lacklustre performance at full time as they witnessed Real’s first European home loss in nine years, with CSKA, completing a double over the UCL holders after earlier defeating them 1-0 in Russia.

In other games, Valencia defeated a lacklustre Manchester United 2-1 in Spain despite fielding an experimental side. The Spanish team took the lead on 17 minutes through Jan Soler who pounced on Phil Jones’ poor clearance from a corner kick to shoot low into the bottom corner.

Defender, Jones’ horror night saw him concede the second goal, diverting a cross into his own net keeper.

Pogba’s form has been poor in recent weeks and the French midfielder contrived to miss an open goal from four yards, blazing wide.

Marcus Rashford, however, scored United’s consolation goal three minutes from time. The defeat consigned Jose Mourinho’s men to second place behind Juventus who also suffered a shock 1-2 defeat in Switzerland against Young Boys FC, their first loss in all competitions this season.

Back in England at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City dominated proceedings but needed a double from winger, Leroy Sane to earn a comeback 2-1 win over Hoffenheim to top their group.

Andrej Krammaric’s penalty gave the German club a shock lead but City equalised on the stroke of half time through Sane’s fierce 25-yard free-kick.

The German international added the second after the half hour mark, completing a counter-attack by dribbling the goalkeeper before slotting into an unguarded net.
