Liverpool paraded a patched-up team in their 1-0 win against Ajax Amsterdam in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) encounter at Anfield on Tuesday night.
The English premier league (EPL) champions relied on a howler from Andre Onana, Ajax goalkeeper, to score the winning goal in the second half and seal passage into the knockout phase of the competition.
Liverpool created the first two chances in the opening minutes through Curtis Jones. The youngster was denied by the goalkeeper and the post respectively.
Ajax’s fluid team impressed afterwards while Liverpool’s level dropped drastically. The Dutch champions went close through Davy Klaasen, Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui who were denied by Caoimhin Kelleher, the Reds’ stand-in goalkeeper.

Chances increased after the interval as Neco Williams and Klaassen went close for Liverpool and Ajax respectively, and the deadlock was eventually broken in the 58th minute through Jones. The 19-year-old midfielder tapped in at the far post after Onana pulled his arms down and allowed Williams’ cross sail over his head instead of catching it. The goal proved to be the match-winner.
Liverpool also confirmed their top spot in Group D with an unassailable 12 points, four ahead of Atalanta going into the final group matches next week.

Shakhtar Donetsk, Ukrainian league champions, defeated Real Madrid 2-0 to complete a home and away double over the Spanish league champions.
The Tractor boys scored twice in the second half to consign Zinedine Zidane’s men to another back-to-back defeat following their loss in the league at the weekend.
Real Madrid dominated the first period and also hit the bar through Marco Asensio, but the Spanish giant fell apart in the second period, courtesy of two devastating counter-attacks.
Shakhtar had defeated Madrid 3-2 in the first leg of the group stage at Spain.
