UCL results: Messi scores in PSG win over Man City as Real Madrid suffer home loss

Lionel Messi scored his first goal for Paris Saint German (PSG) as the French club defeated Manchester City 2-0 in their UEFA Champions League (UCL) encounter at the Parc de Princes stadium in Paris on Tuesday night.

The Argentine superstar, who joined PSG on a free transfer in the summer, scored a trademark goal from just outside the area, adding to Idrissa Gueye’s opener, as PSG took their chances against a wasteful City side.

Messi started alongside Mbappe and Neymar in PSG’s attack, while Raheem Sterling played as the central striker ahead of Gabriel Jesus.

Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG took the lead on eight minutes through Gueye’s well struck shot into the roof of the net after pouncing on Mbappe’s cutback which Neymar could not control.

Man City caused troubles of their own but Donnarumma who was brilliant all through the match denied Joao Cancelo, Kevin de Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez and Ruben Dias, while Sterling and Bernardo Silva hit the crossbar in succession.

Ander Herrera went close for PSG late in the half as the Parisiens went into the break with the slim one-goal lead.

Manchester City are unbeaten in their last 10 UCL games away from home but Messi’s clincher brought an end to the record on 74 minutes.

The 34-year-old went on a trademark run from midfield before latching on to Mbappe’s return ball to slot expertly beyond the Ederson Moraes, City goalkeeper.

PSG closed out the game for their first win of the UCL season.

In other matches, Real Madrid conceded a goal in each half to lose 2-1 at home to Sherif Tiraspol — who are playing in the UCL for the time ever — at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Karim Benzema had canceled the visitors’ lead but Sebastien Thill’s 89th minute drilled shot consigned Real Madrid, 13-time UCL winners, to an embarrassing home loss.
