UI Arts students visit TheCable, say ‘we want to be better campus journalists’

Members of the Association of Faculty of Arts Students (AFAS) Press, University of Ibadan, on Wednesday made a “self-sponsored field trip” to TheCable head office at Alausa, Lagos.

Led by Babawale Oke, their editor-in-chief, the students exhibited vibrancy and keen interest in journalism throughout their two-hour stay, during which they interacted with the newsroom, as well as ‘Fisayo Soyombo, an alumnus of the university and editor of TheCable; and Simon Kolawole, the chief executive officer.

Their questions for TheCable’s editorial team mainly revolved round the similarities and differences between online and print newspapering, online generation of news content, revenue generation streams of TheCable, and internship opportunities for up-and-coming campus journalists.

“We are here because we have a passion for what we do, and we know the only way to get better at it is to learn from the established names in the industry who are already doing it well,” Oke said when the team got audience with Kolawole.

Kolawole promised that TheCable would support the operations of AFAS press and indeed campus journalism in UI in whatever possible way.

“Some people mentored me in the early days of my career and I am willing to play this role for the younger generation if I’m needed,” he said.

“Please feel free to discuss with Soyombo on possible areas of partnership between TheCable and AFAS Press, and you can consider it done.”
