German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson have congratulated Joe Biden on winning the US presidential election.

Macron congratulated the president-elect and Kamala Harris, vice-president-elect, on Twitter.

“The Americans have chosen their president. Congratulations @joebiden and @kamalaharris! We have a lot to do to overcome today’s challenges. Let’s work together!” he tweeted.

Merkel has also congratulated Biden and his running mate.

“I look forward to future cooperation with President Biden,” she wrote in a statement on Twitter.

“Our transatlantic friendship is irreplaceable if we are to master the great challenges of our time.”

The UK prime minister congratulated Biden and Harris on their win as well.

“Congratulations to Joe Biden on his election as president of the United States and to Kampala Harris on her historic achievement,” he said.

He said the US is UK’s most important ally and that he looks forward to working closely together on their shared priorities.

Barack Obama, former US president, also congratulated Biden who was his deputy for eight years.

In a statement, Obama said he was proud of Biden and Harris.

“In this election, under circumstances never experienced, Americans turned out in numbers never seen. I know he’ll do the job with every American at heart, whether they voted for him or not,” he said.

“Congratulations to my friends, @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris— our next president and vice-president of the United States.”
