Umo Eno, governor of Akwa Ibom, has appointed Efa Etuk as his special assistant on sign language.
The governor said the appointment will enhance communication between the auditory impaired community and the public.
Ubong James, chairman of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria (ASLIN) in Akwa Ibom, commended the appointment.
James urged all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), churches, media organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), hospitals, law enforcement agencies and the state house of assembly to include sign language in their activities.

“This will foster a truly inclusive Akwa Ibom state where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive,” he said.
“We call on all 31 local government area chairmen to support and promote the appointment, ensuring that sign language accessibility extends throughout the state.”
James added that ASLIN will appreciate more inclusive and meaningful policies from government.
