Mohammed Fall, the United Nations (UN) resident and humanitarian coordinator for Nigeria, has called for more resources to address the food and nutrition crisis in the country.
Fall spoke in Abuja on Tuesday during the launch of the lean season food security and nutrition crisis multi-sector plan.
He said the nutrition crisis plan aims at aligning existing government investment and efforts in the areas of food, water, health, and sanitation.
The UN chief raised concern over the alarming increase in food and nutrition crises among children in the north-east region, adding that collective efforts are needed to tackle the situation.
“Launching the lean season food security and nutrition crisis multisector plan is a major step to saving lives,” he said.
“I commend the government’s efforts to address the crisis, including declaring a state of emergency on food security in July 2023 by President Bola Tinubu and the ongoing economic measures.
“As we launched the lean season food security and nutrition crisis multi-sector plan, I emphasised the urgent need for resources to address increased needs in support of the government’s efforts.
“Let’s join hands and pool resources together to save lives.”
