UN climate chief Simon Stiell to arrive Nigeria Tuesday for official visit

Simon Stiell, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will arrive Nigeria on Tuesday for a four-day official visit.

A statement on Monday by Ronald Kayanja, director of UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Abuja, said the Stiell will be in Abuja from March 4 to 5, where he will engage with government officials and civil society organisations.

Kayanja noted that Stiell will discuss the opportunities of a strong climate plan during his stay in the country. 

After the meeting in Abuja, he will be in Lagos on March 6 to attend a symposium on the ‘Intersecting Worlds of Climate Change, Mangrove, and Art’, convened by the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat (NCCCS) at the Lekki Conservation Centre.

While in Lagos, Stiell will deliver a speech on how Nigeria can achieve new economic opportunities with a new national climate plan, and why bold climate action can lift people out of poverty, and secure energy access for all.

He will also discuss on how protecting the environment can boost Nigeria’s resilience to extreme weather events caused by climate change.

The UNFCCC executive secretary will participate in a panel discussion with business leaders at the symposium in Lagos and meet with civil society representatives on March 7.
