Uruguay made it to the last 16, thanks to Diego Godin’s late goal. However, they will have to wait to see if Luis Suarez will join them, after he appeared to bite defender Giorgio Chiellini in the victory.
Captain Diego Godin scored in the 81st minute as Uruguay edged 10-man Italy 1-0 to reach the second round of the World Cup. Meanwhile, four-time champions, Italy, are heading home after the group phase for the second time in tow World Cup attempts.
Italy midfielder Claudio Marchisio was shown a direct red card for putting his boot into Egidio Arevalo’s knee in the 59th minute. Mario Balotelli picked up his second yellow card in two matches during the first half, then was benched for the second period.
Uruguay were lucky to not be reduced in numbers themselves later on, as Suarez appeared to sink his teeth into Italian defender Chiellini as the pair tussled in the box.

The Liverpool striker escaped punishment and went on to celebrate with Godin as the defender rose highest from a corner to score the crucial goal with nine minutes remaining, sending Uruguay into the next round and Italy – who needed just a point – home.
Godin rose above a crowd of defenders to meet a corner with his left shoulder and veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon had no chance.
Uruguay finished Group D with six points and Italy goes home with three. Costa Rica shocked the world to finish tops in the group after a 0-0 draw against England in the Group of Champions.
