Elon Musk, Twitter’s new chief executive officer (CEO), on Monday, endorsed the Republican Party ahead of the United States mid-term elections.
The elections are slated to hold on November 8.
In a tweet, Musk asked “independent-minded voters” to choose the Republican Party for congress, especially considering how the presidency is Democratic.
“To independent-minded voters: Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the presidency is Democratic,” Musk wrote.

“Hardcore Democrats or Republicans never vote for the other side, so independent voters are the ones who actually decide who’s in charge!”

Musk has previously said he voted Republican in a special election for a Texas House seat earlier in 2022, and that while he has voted for Democrats in the past, he will now pitch his tent with the Republicans because Democrats “have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them”.

His tweet comes months after he advocated political neutrality on Twitter.
“For Twitter to deserve public trust, it must be politically neutral, which effectively means upsetting the far right and the far left equally,” Musk had tweeted.

Meanwhile, the endorsement comes days after Musk took over ownership of Twitter and began making vast changes to the platform, including a blue tick subscription fee, and laying off staff.

Many public personalities and politicians, including Democrats, have since cricticised his actions.
US President Joe Biden criticised Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, saying it “spews lies all across the world”.

WHY ARE THE US MID-TERM ELECTIONS IMPORTANT?
The mid-term elections, held near the midpoint of a president’s four-year term of office, will have an enormous impact on the direction of the nation, as well as the fate of the person and the party in power in the White House.

Although Joe Biden is not on the ballot, the mid-terms decide who controls congress as well as state legislatures and governor’s offices.
As such, it will give voters an opportunity to indirectly express their views on his presidency and the current direction of the country.
The outcome will also influence the playing field for the 2024 presidential campaign, and especially the odds of former US President Donald Trump seeking re-election.
