Rivers United have been eliminated from the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup by Algeria’s USM Alger.
The Pride of Rivers succumbed to a 2-1 loss on aggregate to the Algerian side in the quarter-final of the competition.
United won the first leg of the encounter 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, last weekend. But they failed to build on the advantage as they were sent out by two unreplied goals at the Omar Hamadi Stadium on Sunday.
Abdullah Kanou, the Malian striker, scored both goals for USM Alger to knock Rivers out of the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final for the second consecutive season.

Kanou opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a close-range finish to equalise the tie for his team. He then put the game beyond the Nigerian team in the 74th minute.
In 2023, United were knocked out of the competition at this stage by Tanzania’s Young Africans.
United are the last Nigerian club on the continent this season, after Enyimba, Remo Stars and Bendel Insurance had all crashed out in the earliest stages.
