Utomi: LP supporters sponsoring rallies — it shows citizens are ready for good governance

Pat Utomi, a chieftain of the Labour Party (LP), says the party’s rallies have been sponsored by its supporters.

Utomi spoke on Monday during an interview with Channels Television.

Recently, supporters of Obi, popularly known as ‘Obidents’, have organised rallies in parts of the country to show support for the candidacy of Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, and Datti Baba-Ahmed, his running mate.

Speaking about the rallies, Utomi said Nigerians are “taxing” themselves to organise rallies.

“These people who have what they called structure, how does the structure run? Structure comes from stealing public money and using it to fuel the system of people who are supposed to be loyalists and thugs,” he said.

“Have you wondered that the ObiDatti movement has hardly spent one kobo of its own money. Young people are taxing themselves to organise these rallies.

“Does it not surprise you? Is that not new and disrupting to public life in Nigeria? It is good for Nigeria. We talked about citizenship for a very long time, and suddenly Nigerians have become citizens and we are wondering where this came from.

“You know the Labour Party. How much of a war chest do you think that they have to be organising rallies of this nature in the Nigeria?

“It is Nigerian people saying they are fed up. We want something different — the government that cares. We want a government for the people, by the people, of the people.

“We don’t want a government of politicians, for politicians, by politicians, which we tend to have in politics in Nigeria, and it is not sustainable.”
