Hope Uzodimma, governor of Imo, says the state is now “free” after two years of not “enjoying peace”.
He said this on Tuesday at a programme tagged ‘Imo Unity Prayers and Praise Convention’, organised by the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Imo has witnessed violent attacks targeted at residents, government officials, and security operatives in past months, with several persons killed and properties destroyed.
However, in recent weeks, there has been a relative decrease in reported attacks across the state.

Speaking at the event, the governor commended the CAN leadership for organising the programme, and urged the people of the state to continue to pray for peace.
“As it is said in the Bible, prayer is the key. In every situation we find ourselves, we will continue to thank God. I also want to use this opportunity to encourage Imo people not to give up, because it is evident God has heard our cry for peace to return to the state,” Uzodinma said.
“God has been fair and kind to us. There is evidence to show that God is in Imo state. For almost two years, we didn’t enjoy peace in the state due to the activities of gunmen and bandits. Today Imo, is free.

“My government will continue to partner with the church because God is fully involved in my government. As a Christian, I have no business with satan and with shedding of blood in the state.”
In his remarks, Divine Eches, Imo CAN chairman, said the organisation will continue to support the state with prayers.
“You have seen what Imo state has passed through, from criminality to banditry and to all forms of evil, and it is our duty to call on God for him to intervene and as well help Imo state government to succeed in its programmes and policies for the state,” he said.
