Victims of fresh Boko Haram killings ‘disobeyed’ security advise

Sani Usman, spokesman of the Nigerian Army, on Monday said those killed by members of the Boko Haram around Chibok in Borno state, acted contrary to security advise.

An operative of the local vigilante group in Borno had told reporters that the sect killed eight people in Kwamjilari, a village close to Chibok, on Sunday.

The security man said the victims were attacked while returning from church.

But in a statement issued on Monday, Usman said two people were involved in the tragic incident.

“The theatre command, Operation LAFIYA DOLE wishes to clarify that alleged suspected Boko Haram terrorists attack at Chibok is not correct,” the statement read.

“What happened was that, two persons were murdered at Kwamjilari village, (which is over 30 kilometres from Chibok, and very close to Sambisa forest), by suspected remnants of Boko Haram terrorists looking for food.

“We wish to reiterate that they weren’t killed outside or near a church as being bandied around.

“The people from the said village are all in internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp in Chibok. Those who went back to the village without authorisation were moved back to Chibok two weeks ago.

“Those killed went back on their own contrary to security advise.

“Nevertheless, a patrol team was sent from Chibok went to the village this morning. Adequate measures would be taken to ensure no one go back to the village for now.”

The statement added that five civilians were killed in an ambush at Sanda community, still in Borno.

“The wounded have been evacuated to Maiduguri.
