The late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was accused by one of his fans during a singing competition as having performed on stage with his underpants.
During an audition on the popular reality Nigerian Idols, a contestant who rendered Fela’s songs appeared in his pants to perform in front of the judges.
Dede Mabiaku, a protege of the Afrobeat legend was part of Fela’s daily life and his band Egypt 80 for more than 10 years. The popular belief is that Fela performed on stage in his underpants, but Dede, who was on the Nigerian Idols panel, clarifies the issue in this video.
