A video has surfaced showing a primary school teacher violently smacking a toddler for failing in a numeracy lesson.

The female teacher, multiple reports have revealed, tutors at Christ Mitots School in the Ikorodu suburb of Lagos state.

In a now-trending video, the teacher sat across a table and appeared to be teaching arithmetics to a boy said to be around age four.

The tutor told the child to write figures 61 and 62 while slapping him at different times for apparently being unable to do so.

The boy, visibly shaky, could be heard sobbing as he followed his teacher’s instructions.

In an accompanying audio call purported to be her conversation with an irate parent, the teacher claimed the kid belonged to her friend.

She hedged that she was trying to correct his mistakes during a numeracy session.

The caller threatened to have the teacher arrested.

“You are the one beating that boy mercilessly. This year, you cannot escape prison,” the parent could be heard yelling over the phone.

“You are a foolish woman. You have your child, and you are beating someone else’s child like that.  You are beating a toddler like that.”

Reacting to the video, a human rights activist called on Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos state governor, to order the school’s closure.

“It is not by force to study. We are not compelling our children to go to school but encourage them,” said the activist.

TheCable understands that the teacher has been picked up by the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LSNC) officers.
