An emotional Asisat Oshoala was unable to hold back the tears on Thursday night as she won the African women footballer of the year award for the third time.
Oshoala broke down at the star-studded CAF awards ceremony in Accra, Ghana.
The former Rivers Angels striker said many naysayers were in her ears when she made the move from Arsenal Ladies to Dalian Quanjian of China in 2017.
But she had a successful season, winning the best striker award in the Chinese top flight, also taking the Super Cup and league titles with Quanjian.

“It was an emotional journey for me in 2017,” said the 23-year-old on the podium.
The FC Robo Queens product, who scored 19 goals in all competitions for Quanjian, was first crowned Africa’s best in 2014.

“Winning this award is one of the best moments in my career,” said Oshoala, who emerged as the top scorer of the CSL in 2017,” she said.
“When I left Arsenal to China, people said my career was over. Here I am winning this award once again. I am using this opportunity to appeal to young ladies out there to follow their mind.”

Oshoala beat CSKA Moscow winger Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene and UWC star Chrestina Kgatlana to the much-coveted prize.
