Violence disrupts NLC election in Abuja

There was commotion at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, on Thursday, where over 3, 000 delegates of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) gathered to elect new members of their national executive council.

The election of new leaders was considered the main issue of the 11th delegates conference, which started on Tuesday. But the election was disrupted as some of the delegates alleged that the process had been compromised, leading to the smashing of ballot boxes and hijacking of some of the electoral materials from the officials.

Delegates scuttled to safety in the ensuing fracas while security agents stepped in to restore law and order.
Those initially seeking to succeed outgoing President Abdulwaheed Omar were Ayuba Wabba, president of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria; Joe Ajaero, general secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, and Igwe Achese, president of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers.
