Visa and Access Bank introduce revolutionary ‘Tap to Phone’ payment solution in Nigeria

Visa, the world leader in digital payments, in partnership with Access Bank, Nigeria’s foremost financial institutions, has announced the launch of ‘Tap to Phone’ in Nigeria. This innovative service allows merchants to process payments using their mobile phones, making transactions more convenient and efficient for both businesses and consumers.

‘Tap to Phone’ transforms any Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled Android smartphone into a payment terminal, enabling merchants to accept Visa payments by simply tapping a Visa card to their phone. This contactless payment method is not only quick and easy but also adheres to the highest security standards.

“This cutting-edge solution will not only provide merchants and consumers with a fast and convenient payment experience but also contribute to the financial inclusion and economic growth of the country” said Andrew Uaboi, Vice President, and Cluster Head of Visa West Africa. “It is a step towards empowering small businesses and driving Nigeria towards a more digital and inclusive future.”

“At Access Bank, we are thrilled to introduce ‘Tap to Phone’ as an innovative payment solution for our customers. This technology aligns perfectly with our commitment to driving digital transformation and enhancing payment convenience for businesses and consumers alike. By leveraging this cutting-edge solution, we are not only facilitating seamless transactions but also supporting our vision of fostering financial inclusion and growth in Nigeria,” said Sola Afolabi, Group Head, Channel Services at Access Bank PLC.

‘Tap to Phone’ is part of Visa’s global initiative to support small businesses as they recover from the pandemic and look towards growth. With over 40 million micro and small merchants in Nigeria, this service has the potential to significantly impact the economy by enabling more businesses to accept digital payments.

With over 250,000 transactions and active programs in 13 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Visa’s Tap to Phone is revolutionizing the way businesses and consumers engage in digital payments across the continent. The launch of ‘Tap to Phone’ in Nigeria is a significant milestone in the journey towards a cashless society and underscores Visa’s dedication to the advancement of digital payments.
