Vote with your conscience, that’s the spirit of Lagos

The spirit of Lagos (SOL), a non-political, non-religious organisation aimed at building a Lagos the world can be proud of, has urged residents of the state to vote their conscience in the coming elections.

According to Olaniyi Omotoso, project director for SOL, the principles of the organisation rest on four cardinal points: social justice, citizenship, good neighbourliness and civic responsibility.

He said it was the civic responsibility of Lagosians to collect their permanent voter cards and vote in the coming election.

“We are out in the streets to urge Lagosians to change those attitudes that negate the spirit of Lagos,” he said.

“As the elections are around the corner, the people need to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) and vote according to their consciences, and not along their primordial or parochial sentiments.

“The people of Lagos must be actively involved in the process of electing those who will be in positions of authority; it is part of their civic responsibility.”

The group also said that beyond voting, the spirit of Lagos was about doing the right thing.

“We are letting them know that it is wrong for people to dispose off their wastes arbitrarily; it is wrong for people to dash across the roads where there are pedestrian bridges; it is wrong for people to evade taxes, and so forth and so on,” Omotosho added.

The team, which is on a state-wide street tour, has so far visited Oshodi Market, Badagry, Mushin market, Ojodu Berger, Ajegunle, Anthony Village and Okokomaiko among many other places across Lagos with the message of attitudinal and behavioural change.
