Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, has expressed concern over the low turnout of voters in the governorship and house of assembly elections in the state.

The governor spoke on Saturday after casting his ballot at polling unit 7, Ward 9 in Rumuepirikom, Obio-Akpor LGA.

The governor, who expressed concern about the development, said some voters got “discouraged” after their candidates lost in the February 25  presidential election.

“The first election came and people didn’t get what they wanted; obviously they are discouraged and it is expected,” the governor said.

“But for whatever it is, it is still okay. You can’t force people to go and vote. But I am happy with the way it is going. The security agents are doing what they are supposed to do.”

Wike said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has improved in the conduct of the election.

He said unlike the delay he experienced with the use of the bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS) in the presidential election, it took the INEC officials a few minutes to accredit him.

“From what I have seen, I have not heard any complaints. I can say they’ve done very well. They have improved more than what we had on the 25 of February,” he said.
