Ghana’s Wakaso scores historic AFCON goal

The Orange Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) reached its 1500th goal milestone during the semi-final clash between Ghana and hosts Equatorial Guinea on Thursday in Malabo.

The important goal was scored by Ghana midfielder Mubarak Wakaso, his side’s second goal against the hosts in the 3-0 win and he goes into the history books as the player to have achieved that historic feat.

The goal is worth its weight in goal.

During added time in the first half, Ghana hit the host on the counter from a broken-down corner. Atsu sprints into space inside the opposition half and has Mubarak free on the right. The midfielder receives the pass, steps inside his marker and drills a finish home.

Super Eagles of Nigeria midfielder, Austin Okocha, scored the 1000th goal of the AFCON at the 2004 edition during the group stage meeting with South Africa on January 31, 2004 at the Mustapha Ben Jannet Stadium in Monastir, Tunisia.

Okocha scored the second goal in the 4-0 win against the Bafana Bafana.

Nigeria and Okocha went on to win bronze in that tournament but Ghana and Wakaso could claim the ultimate prize in Sunday’s final with Cote d’Ivoire.
