We are aiming for 2m votes for Obi from Nasarawa, says state LP chair

The Labour Party (LP) in Nasarawa says it is working towards getting at least two million votes from the state during the presidential election.

Alexander Emmanuel, LP chairman in Nasarawa, said this on Saturday when he received new supporters into the party in Karu LGA of the state.

According to Punch, the state party chairman also said over 27,000 persons defected to the Labour Party from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

“These 27,000 decampees from the APC, PDP and APGA have come to declare support for our presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, and other candidates of Labour Party in Nasarawa state because the political parties in authority have failed us in all aspects of the economy,” he was quoted as saying.

“Universities have been closed for over seven months now and there is no commitment from the federal government to address the issue. There is insecurity and unemployment everywhere in the country. That is why we need to elect competent leaders into office in the coming elections.

“As soon as INEC lifts the ban on campaigns, we are going to begin a door-to-door campaign for our candidates across the state because we are targeting two million votes for Peter Obi in Nasarawa state, and we will work hard towards ensuring victory for all our candidates.”

Meanwhile, for the 2019 elections, a total of 1.6 million registered voters were recorded in Nasarawa, out of which less than 600,000 persons voted on election day.

However, although millions of new registrations have been recorded in the recently-concluded voter registration exercise, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to release the comprehensive list of voters for the 2023 elections.

According to the commission, new names have not been added to the register yet as clean-up is ongoing.

The campaign for the 2023 elections will officially begin on September 28.
