YD Ahmed, director-general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has commended corps members for their contributions to Nigeria’s development.
In a statement on Tuesday, Eddy Megwa, NYSC’s director of information and public relation, said Ahmed gave the commendation in his message to corps members on international youth day 2024.
Ahmed encouraged corps members to acquire skills that would enable them to become self-employed.
He noted that over 500,000 former corps members have become job creators in various fields, in line with the federal government’s renewed hope agenda.

Ahmed also said the NYSC has sensitised over 3.5 million corps members on skill acquisition, youth empowerment, and wealth creation, leading to numerous positive outcomes.
He added that the scheme has established partnerships with various institutions that provide grants to help corps members start their own businesses.
“We are taking a giant stride in NYSC, and with skill acquisition, we have turned many corps members into millionaires,” Ahmed said.

The director-general also advised corps members to be security conscious and avoid actions that could put them in danger.
He further mentioned that Nigeria was among 37 countries invited to share ideas with the Indian government at the 2024 International Youth Exchange Programme.
Ahmed also noted that Tanzania recently expressed interest in replicating the NYSC model, with Nigeria promising to support the country in this regard.
