‘We don’t want good things aborted’ — NIPOST staff explain protest

NIPOST protest NIPOST protest

The National Union of Postal and Telecommunication Employees (NUPTE) says the protest against the sack of Adeyemi Adepoju as postmaster general of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) was not influenced by money.

On Monday, the union locked the headquarters of NIPOST in Abuja to protest the appointment of Tola Odeyemi as the new chief executive officer (CEO) and postmaster general of NIPOST.

While addressing staff of the union in Abuja on Monday, Buba Nehemiah, NUPTE president, said the protest is hinged on Adepoju’s exceptional leadership and performance.

He added that with the sack of Adepoju, “good things are about to be aborted half way”.

“When Adepoju came as the postmaster general, we saw positive signals. And along the line, look at those trucks and dispatch bikes there. That’s what we are saying,” Nehemiah said.

“Nobody paid us to protest, and I don’t think anybody will be able to pay us. But we have seen the reality. We have seen positives.

“We don’t know the newly appointed postmaster general. In fact, we welcome her as our sister and mother. We strongly believe that she might do better.

“But why can’t the federal government realise that when you start something you should be given a little time to complete what you have started?”

On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu relieved Adepoju of his role and appointed Odeyemi as the new CEO of NIPOST.

The announcement made by Ajuri Ngelale, presidential spokesperson, was part of the leadership reshuffle implemented for agencies and parastatals under the ministry of communications, innovations and digital economy.
