Senate President Godswill Akpabio says he and his colleagues empathise with every citizen of the country facing economic hardship.

In a speech welcoming the lawmakers in the red chamber back from an eight-week recess on Tuesday, Akpabio said it is their duty to respond with “urgency and compassion”.

Despite inflation easing in two consecutive quarters according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigerians have continued to endure economic hardship.

“In the face of rising economic pressures, our fellow citizens have been grappling with the harsh realities of inflation, soaring living costs, and an unpredictable market,” he said.

“These challenges have tested the very fabric of our society, and I stand here today to express our deepest empathy for every Nigerian who bears the burden of these trying times.

“Your struggles are not lost on us; it is our sacred duty, as your earnest representatives, to respond with urgency and compassion.”

Akpabio said despite the issues confronting the country, the administration of President Bola Tinubu has made progress in some sectors of the economy.

“Yet, amidst these trials, we have also seen commendable strides in various sectors, thanks to the Executive Arm led by His Excellency President Bola Tinubu, GCFR,” he said.

“Our agricultural initiatives are beginning to bear fruit, and the strides made in infrastructure development are paving the way for a brighter future.

“However, these hard-won gains must not overshadow the pressing issues that still loom large before us. We must prioritize the security of our nation, ensuring that every citizen can walk down any street in this country without fear.

“The recent surge in insecurity, particularly in various regions, is a clarion call for us to double our efforts in crafting laws and taking decisive actions to safeguard our communities.”

Akpabio added that they must pursue “policies that promote economic stability, enhance security, and foster social justice”.
