‘We stand behind Nwabali’ — S’Africa’s Chippa United back Nigeria to win AFCON semi-final

Chippa United, the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, have pledged support for the Super Eagles of Nigeria against their home country ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final. 

Stanley Nwabali, the Super Eagles’ goalkeeper, plays for the South African club.

In a now-deleted statement on the club’s X account on Wednesday, Chippa Mpengesi, the club president, said Nwabali “has been a revelation” at AFCON, adding that the goalkeeper’s performance has brought “international attention” to Chippa United.

He added that the club will “stand behind” Nwabali and the Eagles when they take on the Bafana Bafana on Wednesday.

“As the Chairman of Chippa United FC and as a proud South African, I find myself in a unique position during this 2023 AFCON tournament in that our very own Nigeria international Stanley Nwabali has been a revelation; his performance for the Nigerian National Team has caught the eyes of the globe, earning him and our club international acclaim,” the statement reads.

“With Stanley’s rising profile and the international attention it brings to Chippa United FC, the benefits have been nothing but positive. Therefore, I and Chippa United FC stand behind our player Stanley Nwaball and the Nigerian Super Eagles tomorrow against South Africa Bafana Bafana. We wish the Super Eagles all the best.”

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will play South Africa at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, Ivory Coast. The match is billed for 6 pm.
