‘We want an inclusive society’ — CSO asks Tinubu to prioritise PLWDs

The Centre for Ability, Rehabilitation and Empowerment (CARE) has asked President-elect Bola Tinubu to formulate policies that will be inclusive and beneficial to vulnerable groups.

Chike Okogwu, the group’s executive director, spoke on Monday in Abuja.

He said it is imperative for the incoming government to ensure the inclusion of persons living with disabilities, the elderly and others who may be experiencing hardship.

“I urge the next government to prioritise the needs of vulnerable Nigerians such as persons with disabilities and the poor,” NAN quoted him as saying.

“As a paraplegic myself, I understand the challenges that PWDs face.”

Okogwu implored the incoming government “to ensure that vulnerable groups are included in all policies”.

“We want to see the remodification of infrastructure, provision of disability-friendly services and an all-inclusive society where no one is left behind on the basis of disability,” he added.

Okogwu also said increased engagement with young people will help to build trust in Tinubu’s government.

“The next administration must provide job opportunities and ensure a more conducive environment for small businesses to thrive,” he said.

“It is vital that the next president create platforms for dialogue and engagement with young people who make up a significant percent of Nigeria’s population and ensure that their needs and aspirations are taken into account.

“The government must prioritise building a nation free of corruption, insecurity and underdevelopment and all this can be achieved through collective effort of all Nigerians.”

He added that while citizens need to be supportive, government officials must effectively be alive to their responsibilities.
