Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, has asked Islamic clerics in the state to always give political leaders constructive criticism.
Yusuf spoke on Wednesday during a meeting with Imans of Juma’at mosques at the Kano government house.
The Kano governor asked the clerics to always call him to order whenever he goes wrong, adding that they should always remember Nigeria in their prayers.
Yusuf promised the clerics that his doors are always open to advice and constructive criticisms that can spur development in the state.

“The essence of the meeting is to seek the Ulamas blessing and hear from them about our administration — where does the government go wrong,” he said.
“We will always listen to you and improve on the right things we are doing. This is part of our efforts to restore the lost glory of Kano and its religious values.”
The governor added that the state government is working to improve the monthly allowances of the clerics noting that the payment would be done via an electronic platform.

He disclosed that his administration has commenced plans to renovate Juma’at mosques across the state.
However, Yusuf lamented the rise of immorality in the state, adding that the menace must be checked.
“Committing sins is part of the reasons why we are in this difficult situation. Morality is gone, immorality has taken its place. We cannot condone this kind of situation,” he said.
“Ulamas are no longer respected. This is to the extent that people now abuse them on radio and other media outlets. Kano is known for high moral values and religious practice.

“So, we would no longer condone these bad acts as we are all stakeholders in ensuring morality in the state.
“We also caution some Ulamas who engage in abusing politicians instead of sensitising and correcting the politicians.”
