The Ondo state government says necessary legal action will be taken on the recent judgment nullifying the creation of 33 local council development areas (LCDAs) in the state.

The Ondo state house of assembly passed the bill for the creation of the 33 additional councils on August 15, 2023, after it scaled a third reading.

In September 2023, Rotimi Akeredolu, former Ondo governor, signed the bill a day after his return from a three-month medical leave.

The 33 LCDAs were to co-exist with the 18 LGAs, bringing the total number of local councils in the state to 51.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, Adegboyega Adebusoye, judge of a high court in Akure, nullified the creation of the 33 additional councils.

The judge held that it is illegal for Akeredolu to have signed the law in Ibadan — outside the state he governed.

In a statement on Friday, Kayode Ajulo, attorney-general of Ondo state, said the government has taken cognisance of the judgment and had requested for a Certified True Copy.

Ajulo said after the CTC is studied and analysed, a legal opinion would be presented to the state government.

“Subsequently, all necessary measures, in accordance with our laws, will be taken to safeguard the interests of our citizens, foster peaceful coexistence, and uphold the rule of law,” the statement reads.

“The attorney-general remains steadfast in his commitment to prioritising the well-being and welfare of our citizens, working tirelessly to ensure that justice and the law are served.”

Akeredolu died on December 27, 2023, following a protracted battle with prostate cancer. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, his deputy, was immediately sworn in to succeed him.
