Flood ravages Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, on September 10, 2024
The United Nations (UN) says it is providing food, shelter and health services for victims of the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri, Borno state.
On Tuesday, several residents of Maiduguri were displaced following severe flooding caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam which had been at full capacity for the past weeks.
The incident, which left deadly animals like crocodiles and snakes washed away by flood, with over 200 inmates at large, has raised concern of safety in the state.
President Bola Tinubu had ordered the immediate evacuation of victims, while pleading the federal government’s support for the state.

In a post on X on Friday, António Guterres, UN secretary-general, said the organisation will continue to provide support for those affected by flooding in the country.
“More than 1 million people have been affected by floods in Nigeria. Borno State, which I visited two years ago, has been the hardest hit,” Gutteress said.
“The UN is providing meals, shelter, health services & more emergency assistance, and we’ll continue to support those in need.”

On Thursday the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said over 30 persons have died and over 400,000 have been displaced due to the flood in the state.
