The National Orientation Agency (NOA) says Nigerians have remained peaceful despite the heated political engagements that trailed the general election.

Garba Abari, director-general of NOA, spoke on Tuesday during a press conference in Lagos.

Abari said the non-existence of post-election violence defiled the prediction of  “naysayers” that the polls would make or mar the country.

“One of the challenges of our country is in managing the diversity of a big nation like ours,” the director-general said.

“That challenge becomes even more burdensome during the national election.

“In fact, before the elections, going by the tone of political engagements, you would think that the nation was on its brink.

“Some naysayers have gone to the extent of describing the election as a make or mar event in our country.

“More than one month after the elections, we have remained resolute on the path of peace and stability.”

The NOA DG urged the media to refrain from promoting caustic narratives that may destabilise the country.

He encouraged politicians to dissuade their supporters from taking actions that may promote violence in the country.

Abari condemned the violent attacks in Lagos during the elections, adding that the state has always managed its vast diversities with admiration and courage.

“Lagos is an important and strategic state in Nigeria. It remains the commercial capital, media hub, the melting point of culture and tradition, and one of the most advanced political environments in the country,” he added.

“The city-state has developed a vast capacity to absorb the unending stream of visitors for many years.

“Allegations and counter-allegations are being hauled all over the place. That is not the Lagos we all admired.”
