Islamic Tijjaniyya movement stormed the streets of Abuja and Kaduna to celebrate Maulud Nabiyy, the birth of Prophet Muhammed, on Saturday.
Rabiu Kwankwaso, a serving senator and former governor of Kano state, was among the notable Nigerians who identified with the movement.
Their activities caused traffic gridlock in Abuja and Kaduna and some of those who mistook the sect members for followers of Ibrahim Zakzakky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), attacked IMN on social media.
Below are reactions from Nigerians on social media:

On Facebook, Frederick Nwabufo, a journalist, wrote: “Abuja has been shut down by some religious folks. The city centre is completely inaccessible. And this is the Federal Capital Territory! Is Nigeria a zoo?”

No, sir. It’s not the Shiites that shut Abuja down yesterday. It’s a Sufi group we call Tariqat al-Tijaniyya or simply Tariqa. They were marking Maulid in honour of one of their leaders, a revered Senegalese cleric called Ibrahim Nyass (d. 1975). https://t.co/bswngVMl0I

The hypocrites going berserk about how the Shiites disrupted vehicular movements in Abuja yesterday, have nothing to say about how the Tariqas celebrating Maulid have shut Abuja down today.
Stuck in traffic in Central Area for the past one hour, and there is no easy way out!

The Tariqas have shutdown Abuja since yesterday but if the Shiites have a 1hr Rally from Unity Fountain to Secretariat some people will be vexing.
This is right now, Mabushi – Central Area. Complete lockdown. pic.twitter.com/JW5uNh0pCP

AdvertisementIf the Shiites had shut Abuja and Kaduna down the way the Tariqas did today, we would’ve been counting corpses and graves this evening.

As much as I’m not happy with the unnecessary stress they’re causing, all they’re doing is moving in numbers, not carrying sticks, cutlass or any dangerous weapon, they didn’t close any lane or beat up ppl,Shiites killed people while Zakzaky protected them, this your tweet is shaking https://t.co/JsmZLahb8c

So this man got into Tijjaniyya movement crowd and started waving hands just for us to assume he’s got all those people. Lol…Kwankwaso you’re a joke. You can do that else where but not in Kano.

Apparently the Moulud celebrated by Tijjaniyya movement in Abuja was sponsored by politicians like Kwankwaso and Labaran Maku. It’s quite unfortunate that religious leaders have allowed politicians to penetrate religious movements.
