When he appeared on Channels Television on Sunday, Festus Keyamo, spokesman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential campaign, said it’s not compulsory to have the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) certificate to contest an elective position.
Keyamo was reacting to the certificate scandal of Ademola Adeleke, governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun state.
The senior lawyer’s comment attracted different reactions. While some said Keyamo has finally accepted that President Muhammadu Buhari never sat for WAEC, others said there were lapses that need to be addressed in the constitution.
Below are reactions from Twitter and Facebook.

@fkeyamo is right when he says you don't need WAEC result to become president. Case closed.
You only have issues when you make a false claim on having the result pic.twitter.com/RdKYHYj26h— Bale of Abuja (Tech plug) (@Godblessbale) April 15, 2019

It is worrying when supposed senior judges and lawyers, including Senior Advocates, don't know their School Certificate from their First School Leaving Certificate. Law in Nigeria is a joke! No School Certificate (WAEC) no presidency, Period! pic.twitter.com/HyF2diqTHc

Buhari may not need a WAEC certificate to contest but once he swore to an affidavit or presented a form indicating that his qualifications include WAEC it becomes a different matter. Or has he withdrawn his WAEC claim? This is a matter of perjury and not whether he is qualified.

And if next year, we see a mass failure in WAEC, how would @MBuhari have the moral authority to say anything? When he has told our youths that they don’t need WAEC to secure the highest post in the land, who will now study? They will just say ‘to hell with WAEC’, I dont need you!

The @OfficialPDPNig charges @MBuhari to tender his WAEC certificate which he claimed he has, to the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal instead of allowing his campaign spokesperson, @fkeyamo, to insult the sensibility of Nigerians with lame attempt at diversionary tactics. pic.twitter.com/zPMAXuF2u6

When a Senior Advocate is saying WAEC certificate is irrelevant in the highest position attainable in d Country, what kind of message is he passing across to d youths and mostly secondary school students? These are one of the reasons why our Education sectors MAY not work again. pic.twitter.com/GX5d5p9YEI

When Buhari hires 13 SANS to defend his WAEC certificate, I knew he didn’t sit for the exam.

No wonder why his Government has turned many Nigerian Professors into Okpos. https://t.co/tAKxVtvUw2— Prof Stanley Nwabia (@MrStanleyNwabia) April 15, 2019
Now that WAEC isn't even needed to contest for any post in my country.
it's safe to say the ones in schools are not the leaders of tomorrow.
