Georginio Wijnaldum’s bullet header after eight minutes made the difference at Anfield against Manchester City on Saturday night.
Liverpool took a slender lead into the break after a first half which, quite simply, failed to live up to pre-match expectations.
Manchester City were contained easily by Liverpool and failed to register a single shot on target throughout the first 45 minutes.
Adam Lallana ran 35 yards before he delivered a sublime ball from the left at the end of a fine team move and Wijnaldum rose highest to power a brilliant header past Claudio Bravo into the left side of the net to give Liverpool the lead in the 8th minute.

Plenty of huff and puff from both teams in the middle third, but neither was able to find the killer pass that could help carve out an opening.
Liverpool hold on to a vital win to keep themselves six points adrift of Chelsea, while City’s challenge is fading fast as they are left 10 points adrift.
