Wike, CP appear before senate over insecurity in FCT

Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), and Benneth Igwe, commissioner of police for the territory, have appeared before the senate over the rising insecurity in the nation’s capital.

The duo appeared before the senators in a closed session on the floor of the red chamber on Wednesday.

The outcome of the meeting was not immediately known at the time of filing this report.

The senators are usually briefed about security matters in a closed session in line with the standing rules of the upper legislative chamber.

The senate had invited the minister and the commissioner of police in February after it considered a motion sponsored by Ned Nwoko, senator representing Delta north.

Nwoko had spoken about the killing of Chris Agidy, his senior legislative aide (SLA), in 2023.

The police said they have since arrested the killer of the late Agidy.

When the motion was taken, the senate urged Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police (IGP), to increase patrols and surveillance within the FCT.

The upper legislative chamber also asked the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure that there is a dedicated emergency number for police, ambulance and fire services.
