Women affairs minister visits abducted girls, promises rehabilitation support

Uju Kennedy, minister of women affairs, says a full rehabilitation programme would be provided for the abducted sisters who recently regained freedom from their abductors.

Kennedy spoke on Monday during a visit to a health facility in Abuja where the girls are receiving treatment.

The six sisters were abducted alongside their father from their residence in Zuma 1, Bwari area council of the federal capital territory (FCT) on January 2.

Nabeeha, one of the girls was killed by the bandits while in captivity over the inability of the family to pay the ransom of N60 million.

The girls were released on Saturday night after spending 18 days in captivity.

During the visit, the minister said the rehabilitation exercise is to ensure proper management of the traumatic experience they suffered and to also reintegrate them into society.

Kennedy said she would partner with the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) to ensure one of the girls is posted to serve in her ministry.

“The ministry will closely monitor their recovery and will be there for them immediately they leave this facility and commence full rehabilitation which includes engagement of a psychologist due to the trauma they must been through during the period in the kidnappers’ custody,” she said.

“Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is deeply worried about this trend of kidnapping and is working assiduously towards addressing the situation.

“After this visit, I will update the president and first lady about the condition of these girls.”

She urged the parents of the girls to move them from the current school to another environment for safety purposes.

She also commended the Nigerian Army and the police for collaborating to ensure the girls were released.

The minister donated food items such as beverages, soap, bags of rice, noodles and sanitary items to the girls.
