Makarfi was appointed at the party’s national convention in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

In his acceptance speech, the new chairman assured leaders of the party that they would have no cause to regret choosing him.

“I humbly accept this challenge, and I do soon behalf of other members of the committee. I assure you that you will have no cause to worry. None of us is seeking any office,” he said.

“We are here to serve and bring unity to our party. I call on all aggrieved party men and women, to give us a chance to rebuild our party to give hope to Nigeria and black race.

“I thank all of you reposing confidence in us, and I assure you that we will not fail you

Earlier Nyesom Wike, Rivers state governor and chairman of the convention, had told the committee members that they were ineligible for election.
