Argentina squeezed past the Netherlands 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw after extra time to advance into the semi-final stage of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Argentines, led by captain Lionel Messi, squandered a two-goal lead before Emiliano Martinez’s heroics won it for the South Americans in the penalty shootout.
Nahuel Molina and Lionel Messi gave Argentina a two-goal lead before Wout Weghorst’s late double dragged the Netherlands back into the encounter.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, however, proved the hero with two saves to lead Argentina to a 4-3 win in the shootout as the South Americans qualified for the semi-final for the first time since 2014.
