Yahaya Bello visited EFCC’s office but wasn’t interrogated, says his media office

The media office of Yahaya Bello says the former governor of Kogi was at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja but was asked to leave without being interrogated.

On Wednesday, Ohiare Michael, director of Bello’s media office, said the former governor had “honoured the invitation” of the anti-graft agency over alleged money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of N80.2 billion.

Michael said Bello honoured the EFCC’s invitation “after due consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies”.

However, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson, in a statement, denied that the former governor was in the agency’s custody, adding that Bello remains wanted.

But Bello’s media office has insisted that their principal was at the EFCC headquarters in the company of Usman Ododo, the incumbent governor of Kogi.

“Alhaji Yahaya Bello, former Governor of Kogi, who walked into the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday morning, left the commission’s office unquestioned,” NAN quoted Michael as saying.

“The EFCC did not interrogate him. He was told that he could leave by officials of the commission. We don’t know what this means yet.

“He was accompanied to the commission’s office by Gov Usman Ododo.”

On April 18, the EFCC declared Bello wanted after an unsuccessful attempt to arrest him and asked anyone with useful information on his whereabouts to contact the commission or the nearest police station.

Before this, the former governor failed to appear in court to defend the allegations made against him by the anti-graft agency.
