Yesterday is gone

YouNow is created for the everyday individual who seeks to gain a deeper understanding of Self in order to achieve their highest potential, while staying true to their essence. These write-ups are designed to help you become more conscious and deliberate in your interactions and day-to-day living

The past is known to be a place that is no longer in existence, not present in time. Existing only in the mind, as memories and pictures, relived through thoughts and words.

However, for some, the past is more real than the present.

Even though we all speak of moving forward, we hold on to the past more than we care to admit.

‘Back then, hmm! …You don’t know me o…go and ask those who know’

‘What is he saying? My speeches were far better, it’s just that…’

We find consolation in continually comparing the past to the present and how the present should resemble the past.

We choose to live there because it’s familiar.

We know everything that happened.

When the past was really good, you can live there because just thinking back on it gives you a feeling of comfort, happiness or even relevance.

As well as elation, you probably also feel a lot of pain, regret, disappointment and even shame. And this is normal. It is completely human to suffer as a result of reflecting on the past, and we all experience this in different shapes and forms.

While some of us find relief and peace in relinquishing the past and embracing the present, others somehow cant seem to escape from the grips of the past and the impact it has had on their lives.

We live in the past because we don’t want to deal with the present;  for fear of what may come in the future.

Disengage your mind from its constant preoccupation with the past or the future.

Lead yourself to experience a presence like a sense of freedom and inner silence while doing whatever needs to be done at the present moment.

Living in the present has always been a formidable challenge to humanity, and will likely continue to be.

The present moment has a logic and momentum of its own and the world is fine as it is, (with all its angularities and imperfections? Yes it is).

It need not, and will not, be different, no matter how much we complain and rant about it.

Accepting and embracing the present as it is, holds the key to peace and sanity.

In the words of one of my favorite quotes ever…
