Yobe deploys research team to communities over rising kidney failure cases

The Yobe state government says it has deployed 50 health experts to investigate the root causes of the spike in kidney failure cases in some parts of the state.

Mahmud Maina, director of the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre in Yobe University, spoke in Gashua, Bade LGA.

“We are here in Bade emirate to begin a kidney research project funded by Gov. Mai Mala Buni,” Maina said.

“The research is to understand the risk and causative factors contributing to the high number of deaths related to kidney disease, particularly within this emirate.”

Maina added that the team comprises 50 experts, which includes neurology consultants, laboratory scientists, nephrologists, geologists, chemists, echo toxicologists, and collaborators from the UK, US and Ghana.

He stated that the team will conduct interviews with 2,000 people in Bade and Damaturu LGAs to determine whether the causes are environmental, lifestyle-related, or genetic.

Babagoni Waru, the chief medical director of the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to deliver on the assignment.

Ibrahim Babagana, chairman of Bade LGA, assured the team of the council’s support. He also lamented the loss of six of his family members to kidney disease.
