NPFL preview: Armed with attacking football, Yobe Desert Stars return to top flight

Yobe Desert Stars are back in the top flight after a lengthy absence. TheCable takes a look at their preparation and readiness for the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

After almost two decades in the wilderness of the Nigeria National League (NNL), the Desert Stars fought hard in the 2016/2017 season to finish runners-up, earning a return to the NPFL.

The sole objective of the Damaturu-based side, which narrowly avoided being disbanded, will be to survive the upcoming campaign.

Coach Baba Ganaru has already landed Philip Auta from Nasarawa United and has also completed the signing of Shagari Mohammed while striker Chidebere Ajoku will be relied upon to deliver in the final third.

Ganaru’s direct attacking style has earned the club many admirers but the former Kano Pillars manager has also reinforced his defence which can sometimes be found wanting.

Defenders Zayyad Musa and Buhari Musa have been signed from Kaduna United and Mighty Jets respectively while Enugu Rangers goalkeeper Itodo Akor has been brought in to add an experienced hand to the relatively young dressing room.

Although Ganaru has earned a reputation as a stabiliser, competing at the top level with the Yobe Desert Stars might be his biggest test yet.

Can Chidebere Ajoku be the go-to man?

Ajoku will have to be the difference maker for Yobe Desert Stars this season if they have any chance of survival. It is finally his time to prove himself on the biggest stage.

Itodo Akor the great signing

Itodo is Yobe’s high profile signing of the transfer window. His skill and experience between the sticks will prove invaluable this season.

The big question

Are the Yobe Desert Stars well equipped to survive the rigours of top flight football?
