‘Your legacy extends beyond Nigeria’ — Dapo Abiodun pays tribute to Obasanjo on 88th birthday

Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun, has hailed former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday anniversary.

Abiodun spoke on Wednesday at an event organised to celebrate the former president, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital.

The governor described Obasanjo as as an “advocate for peace, security, and development,” noting that his legacies extend beyond Nigeria and Africa.

“History will continue to be kind to you because the story of Nigeria and your story is closely and intimately intertwined, and the name Olusegun Aremu Okikiola Obasanjo will remain indelibly entrenched in the minds of so many generations to come,” Abiodun said.

“Beyond your successful career in the military, you’ve continued to demonstrate that you are a true patriot, a leader, who is irrevocably devoted to the advancement of Nigeria.”

He commended the former president for his commitment to democracy and national unity.

Abiodun, who also described Obasanjo as a pragmatic community leader, said his administration would continue to be inspired by the achievements and legacies of the former president.

“Your role, particularly in being instrumental to the first civilian-to-civilian transition, remains a landmark achievement; one that underscores the commitment to democracy, governance, and national unity,” the governor added.

“Your resilience, your vision, and your relentless pursuit of excellence continue to showcase you as a statesman, an advocate for peace, security, and development. Your legacy, without a doubt, extends beyond Nigeria and Africa.”

Obasanjo expressed gratitude to the governor, while describing the presentation of his two books titled ‘Lest We Forget: Slavery, Slave Trade, Emancipation, and Reparation’ and ‘Nigeria: Past and the Future’, as timely.

He noted that for Nigeria to break away from slavery and colonialism, all hands must be on deck towards achieving the goal.

Some dignitaries present at the event were Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, Adolphus Wabara, former senate president, and Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra.

Others are Emeka Ihedioha, former governor of Imo, Sam Egwu, former minister of education, Ibikunle Amosun, former governor of Ogun state, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former governor of Osun and Sule Lamido, former minister of foreign affairs.
