The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) says it has begun the establishment of a Digital Economy Centre (DEC) in Kafanchan, Kaduna state.

The agency, had in August, approved the establishment of the centre following a request by Sunday Katung, the senator representing Kaduna South senatorial district.

In a letter to the agency, dated July 18, 2023, Katung had requested for the establishment of DECs in five secondary schools in his constituency, including women and youth training centres.

The DEC is part of NITDA’s efforts to promote Nigeria’s digital economy drive.

The agency has established similar centres in other parts of the country, and it plans to set up more in the coming years.

According to a statement by the agency on Sunday, the equipment for the installations was delivered on Saturday by a NITDA official to Simon Yusuf, principal, Government Secondary School (GSS) Kafanchan, where the project is located.

The NITDA official said the installation of the equipment would be completed within one week.

Reacting to the development, Katung commended NITDA for its prompt approval and action on his request, adding that the centre “will be a game changer for unemployed youths in the area”.
