Zamfara gov suspends district head over ‘involvement’ in banditry

Bello Matawallen, governor of Zamfara, has suspended Abubakar Bala, a senior district head of Gummi, a local government area in the state, over alleged involvement in banditry.

In a statement on Wednesday, Aliyu Bello, permanent secretary of cabinet affairs and general services, said the suspension of the district head is in connection with the killings which took place in Karaye village in Gummi LG, on Sunday.

The Zamfara police command said 14 persons were killed in the attack, which happened to be the first major breach of the peace agreement between the state government and suspected bandits.

At least 10 other persons sustained gunshot wounds while some houses were set ablaze in the attack.

“Alhaji Abubakar Bala Gummi is suspended with immediate effect, pending the investigation of the alleged act of misconduct arising from the recent killings of innocent people of Karaye village,” the statement read.

The governor set up a committee to investigate the remote causes of the recent killings in the state.

Matawallen earlier dethroned Abubakar Cika, emir of Maru and removed Lawal Ahmad, district head of Kanoma under Maru emirate council, over their alleged involvement in banditry.
